At A Glance
Ranger is a 5-month-old German Shepherd mix who completed a 2-Week Board and Train with Off Leash K9 Training in Dayton, Ohio. He entered training with a good foundation already in place, including sit and fairly strong recall, but he still struggled with several typical puppy behaviors and confidence challenges. His program focused on strengthening the obedience he already knew while adding more structure, boundaries, impulse control, and real-world confidence. Ranger also practiced maintaining commands around distractions, working in unfamiliar environments, and staying responsive during off-leash activity.

Dog: Ranger
Breed: German Shepherd mix
Age: 5 months
Location: Dayton, OH
Program: 2-Week Board and Train
Main Focus: Jumping, chewing, counter surfing, trash behavior, stubbornness, confidence, unfamiliar people, impulse control, recall, and distraction work
Outcome: Stronger obedience, better impulse control, improved household manners, greater confidence, and more reliable recall around distractions
The Challenge
Ranger entered training with a useful head start, but several behaviors still made everyday life more difficult.
Before training, Ranger:
- Knew sit
- Had fairly good recall
- Jumped on people
- Jumped on doors
- Chewed inappropriate items
- Counter surfed
- Got into the trash
- Could be stubborn
- Did not always want to listen
- Became nervous around unfamiliar people
- Lacked confidence in new environments
- Needed stronger impulse control
- Needed more consistent everyday obedience
His family had already established a solid foundation. The next step was helping Ranger become more dependable while also building confidence in situations that made him uncertain.
The Training Approach
Ranger’s 2-Week Board and Train focused on reinforcing the obedience he already knew while adding clearer structure and stronger impulse control.
Training focused on:
- Strengthening recall
- Improving overall obedience
- Building command consistency
- Reinforcing household boundaries
- Addressing jumping
- Improving impulse control
- Reducing counter surfing
- Improving behavior around trash
- Reinforcing more appropriate chewing habits
- Teaching Ranger to hold commands until released
- Building confidence around unfamiliar people
- Increasing comfort in new environments
- Improving handler engagement
- Practicing around real-world distractions
A major goal was helping Ranger understand that commands still applied even when something exciting or unfamiliar was happening around him.
Real-World Training
Ranger practiced his skills in several public environments so he could learn to remain responsive outside a quiet training setting.
His outings included:
- Elementary school playgrounds
- Dunham’s Sports
- Tractor Supply
- Melvin Miller Playground
- Freedom Grove
These environments introduced different people, sounds, movement, surfaces, smells, and distractions. Each outing gave Ranger opportunities to practice obedience while also building greater confidence around unfamiliar surroundings.
Distraction and Impulse-Control Training
One of Ranger’s biggest challenges involved his favorite ball. Because he loved playing fetch, remaining in a down while the ball was thrown around him required significant self-control.
With practice, Ranger learned to:
- Remain in position despite a highly exciting distraction
- Hold the down command
- Wait for his release
- Stay engaged with his trainer
- Avoid immediately breaking position to chase the ball
- Make calmer choices around high-value distractions
This type of training helped strengthen both command duration and impulse control.
Recall and Off-Leash Work
Ranger entered the program with fairly good recall, giving his trainer a useful foundation to build on. As his responsiveness improved, he was given opportunities to practice greater freedom while remaining connected to his trainer.
His recall work included:
- Strengthening response to the recall cue
- Practicing around distractions
- Building handler engagement
- Reinforcing consistency at greater distances
- Practicing while running and exploring
- Developing more dependable off-leash responsiveness
Ranger was eventually able to enjoy off-leash activity while continuing to check in and respond to his trainer.
The Results
By the end of his two-week program, Ranger showed progress across both obedience and confidence-building goals.
What improved:
- Overall obedience became stronger
- Listening and command follow-through improved
- Impulse control became better
- Household manners improved
- Focus around distractions became stronger
- Recall became more reliable
- Off-leash responsiveness improved
- Confidence around unfamiliar people increased
- Comfort in new environments improved
- He became better able to remain calm while activity happened around him
- He learned to hold commands until released
- Handler engagement became stronger
One of Ranger’s most important improvements was learning that excitement or uncertainty did not have to automatically control his behavior. At only 5 months old, he still has plenty of development ahead, but he completed training with a stronger foundation for his family to continue reinforcing at home.
Trainer Insight
Young dogs can have a good obedience foundation while still struggling with impulse control, confidence, and consistency. For Ranger, these areas were closely connected. When something exciting appeared, such as his favorite ball, impulse control became important. When unfamiliar people or environments appeared, confidence and handler engagement became equally important. Real-world training helps dogs learn that commands still apply outside a controlled setting, while structured confidence-building can help a nervous puppy become more comfortable without forcing interactions. Continued owner practice will be important as Ranger matures and encounters new situations.
